By the way, when temperatures fluctuated a lot in the past, nomadic people folded their tents and went somewhere else. That’s not really possible today. People fleeing from global warming will be a big expense in rich countries, and the cause of wars in poor ones. Which is why the IPCC and Gore got the “Peace” Prize.

It is not a myth because it is happening. Yes it is a “natural” cycle, but CO2 emissions and other pollutants have been increasing the rate the temps rise.

Global warming is true, man-made global warming is a theory at best.
When it comes to man-made GW, it is neither myth or fact, it is a theory. It is not a fact because it is not 100% proven, it is not a myth because it is not 100% proven that it is not true. The supporters on this site post the same sites [Realclimate.org, ipcc.org or com, wiki (this site should never be posted, it has no validity because the public writes the information onto the site), and NASA (it is clear which side Hansen is on)].
All of the supporters on this site make claims that any evidence disproving AGW is false without any real scientific support. They just post what the above stated sites claim. Most of these supporters claim to be scientists, yet they do not discuss the information at hand with any kind of scientific vocabulary. (At this point they will post “we state the material in these terms so the general public can understand…….blah blah blah) Posting wikipedia and realclimate.org are 2 sites that have been discredited (wiki because the public owns it and realclimate.org because the scientists on realclimate.org are geologists and according to the zealots on these boards, Don Easterbrook is not qualified to discuss global warming because he is a geologist. In fact, most of the people who run that site are climate scientists by training. Which means they have no formal education about sciences).
The alarmists have a powerful enemy to fight against, that enemy is time. Time will tell whether they are telling the truth or not. Most climate scientists think we are heading into a cooling period for the next 30 years. So they have to fight against time which will most likely disprove their claims. I say most likely because the theories supporting or denying global warming can be proven false at any moment. Mainly because neither of them are a fact.

As a scientist, I am not influenced by nonsense such as CO2 levels have increased and temperatures increased; therefore CO2 causes increased temperature. There is a sizable portion of our population that wants to believe we are responsible for everything bad. They even try to twist something generally good into something bad and what really iritates me is that try to cloak it in science. Warmth is generally beneficial. Those pretending that it is not should not be trusted to solve problems that are largely created in their minds. They eagerly quote scientists and politicians that are all too willing to solve their problems yet seldom understand the basics of what they are talking about. I work with fellow geologist and environmental consultants and many are very left wing. None of them believe humans are responsible for harmful global warming. I am sure there are some well meaning scientist that believe that but I am also sure there is no consensus.
Atmospheric CO2 levels have historically followed temperature increases. The CO2 levels increased because temperatures increased. There is no reliable evidence that we have affected the climate beyond the background noise. Global temperatures, climates, CO2 levels, habitats, ice cover, etc… all change over time. Those suggesting otherwise are ignorant, devious, or just plain gullible.
You will notice that Bob quotes an admiral and then suggests in the next sentence about his supposed consensus as if that somehow fulfills his science is data statement.

Global warming and global cooling are facts supported by history. Man-made global warming is a complete scam. Man-made co2 is a tiny fraction of the co2 produced in the world, nature produces the rest. The biggest green house gas is water vapour, best you environmentalists stop sweating.

Temperatures have NOT fluctuated like this in the past. While there have been changes in temperatures in the past, no previously seen cycle of temperature swings looks like this one. This time it is occurring faster than before, and does not match the naturally occurring catalysts of temperature changes.

It’s not a myth, it’s science.
There are many basic scientific facts which can only be explained if the current global warming is being caused by an increased greenhouse effect due to carbon dioxide accumulating in the atmosphere from humans burning fossil fuels.
For example, the planet is warming as much or more during the night than day. If the warming were due to the Sun, the planet should warm a lot more during the day when the Sun has influence. Greenhouse gases trap heat all the time, so they warm the planet regardless of time of day. Another example is that the upper atmosphere is cooling because the greenhouse gases trap the heat in the lower atmosphere. If warming were due to the Sun, it would be warming all layers of the atmosphere.
We know it’s warming, and we’ve measured how much:
Scientists have a good idea how the Sun and the Earth’s natural cycles and volcanoes and all those natural effects change the global climate, so they’ve gone back and checked to see if they could be responsible for the current global warming. What they found is:
Over the past 30 years, all solar effects on the global climate have been in the direction of (slight) cooling, not warming. This is during a very rapid period of global warming.
So the Sun certainly isn’t a large factor in the current warming. They’ve also looked at natural cycles, and found that we should be in the middle of a cooling period right now.
“An often-cited 1980 study by Imbrie and Imbrie determined that ‘Ignoring anthropogenic and other possible sources of variation acting at frequencies higher than one cycle per 19,000 years, this model predicts that the long-term cooling trend which began some 6,000 years ago will continue for the next 23,000 years.’”
So it’s definitely not the Earth’s natural cycles. They looked at volcanoes, and found that
a) volcanoes cause more global cooling than warming, because the particles they emit block sunlight
b) humans emit over 150 times more CO2 than volcanoes annually
So it’s certainly not due to volcanoes. Then they looked at human greenhouse gas emissions. We know how much atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased over the past 50 years:
And we know from isotope ratios that this increase is due entirely to human emissions from burning fossil fuels. We know how much of a greenhouse effect these gases like carbon dioxide have, and the increase we’ve seen is enough to have caused almost all of the warming we’ve seen over the past 30 years (about 80-90%). You can see a model of the various factors over the past century here:
This is enough evidence to convince almost all climate scientists that humans are the primary cause of the current global warming.

Some ppl say that it is a myth and then someother ppl say that it is true…i believe that it is happening and it isn’t…if that makes since… I live in a place that we aren’t suppose to see that much snow and we have had a lot of cold weather and this january we even had a tornado..which is INSANE!!! I believe that ppl should fight to get ppl to recognize that the world is heating up and then again could be cooling down…take for exaple the snow in iraq…does anyone else think that this is just plain NO SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN???!!!

The two areas where the public displays it’s utter contempt for science is global warming and evolution. Evolution is far more of a pat case than GW, yet about 50% of Americans don’t believe it. AGW has become a pretty pat case even though all the details are not worked out, and even China has vowed to cut 20% of it’s CO2 by 2010.
The public straggles along. Some are hell bent on trying their best to find clever ways to deny it. Others just don’t trust science or understand how science works. Others just **** Al Gore and think that by believing in GW, they are supporting him. All of these reasons are irrational.
All in all, it is a sad and embarrassing state of affairs.

Can I answer your question by asking you to look at the answers you have received so far? On one hand you have the deniers that mostly come across as paranoid and suspicious. “it is a scam created by goverment to take control etc etc” with no links posted. On the other hand you have some really interesting answers that are well written and informative. They seem to be posted by people that have actually done a bit of research and have considered facts and posted interesting links.
I know which side of this fence I stand and imagine that 90% of semi-intelligent people with the ability to reason agree with me.
Have you seen this? It is kind of cool and really puts into perspective the effect that 6.6 BILLION people have on the environment.

everyone has a long drawn out answer to this question so let me answer it simply. The earth has never before seen as many carbon monoxcide producing cars as it has now. also population is extremely high if not in the US then in many other countries. of course this is going to have a negative effect to our planet. the planet has the ability to clean itself but it can’t keep up with our poluting ways.

big sciencist, professional, go green, vegetarian, or protester. I am not any scholar either. The government isn’t supposed to lie to us!! well in the 60-70′s period we thought “Hey who the heck cares,” or “You little liers what the heck are u thinking lieing to us to get money!!!” And some of us thought (this is my favorite one) “Let’s go and get drunk and chew and live on the road with no jobs playing guitar,” or “Hey dude want some snuff?!?” We know them as the Hippies!!! LOL! But seriously they have proof about the o – zone I mean come on they BANNED PRODUCTS because of Global Warming!! & the government and scientists and others aren’t gonna’ be taking a risk like that!! They know they’ll get sued. Some of the government’s money actually goes to troops in Iraq!! And if we start a war like a 3rd WORLD WAR WE’LL NEED MONEY!!! GLOBAL WARMING ISN”T A MYTH!!!!!!!! Well….. I remember back in the 70′s, some of these same so-called experts were predicting doom and gloom because man’s activities were pushing our planet into another Ice Age. Now it’s like….. ‘Oh never mind’ that…. ‘the Earth is REALLY warming’ (due to man, of course).

Yes I think it is true. But the Earth is just going through a cycle I think. But with all the pollution we are doing, we are speeding it up and we can’t keep up with the change.

What seals the deal for me is the way the sides address the issue. The AGW fanatics call people names, refuse to debate in public, rely on “consensus” as scientific evidence, speak in absolutes, fire scientist for speaking out, lie about their studies, hide the details of their studies, refuse to admit once they are caught lying in their studies, ignore any differing evidence, and use Al Gore’s movie as “evidence”.
The AGW “skeptics” welcome open debate, present their studies for peer review, do not speak in absolutes, use science, not “consensus” for evidence, stand up to ridicule by main stream media, have courage to present ideas that could get them fired.
In my life experiences, anyone who acts as the AGW fanatics do are hiding something or out right lying.
